Master Bathroom Remodeling MakeOver
Welcome to our master bathroom remodel makeover.
This is going to be my tenth bathroom remodeling makeover. But my past remodeling jobs have not been as extensive as this one is going to be.
A little history of the master bathroom, you know it is one of those track home builders whom crank out 15 houses in 6 months. And they might give you a lot of square footage, but the cut whatever corner they can to keep costs down.
The troubles started with mold and fungus appearing in the grout joints within shower stall. But no matter what product you used, the grout never stayed clean. I re-caulk the joints between the shower pan and the tile at least three times, but that continued to break down with in a short time.
After trying to clean the grout and re-chaulked a few times, it never got clean or stayed clean. Oviously to me there was something else going on behind the tile. Other evidence starting appearing, like grout starting to fall out. I began to suspect the tile was adhered to green board drywall or some other inferior material. I'll found out soon enough. I easily popped the tile off the wall with a ordinary putty knife. And water drained out of the space after I removed the tile. It was not only taking on water, it was holding on to it to cause more damage over time. Mold needs moisture to survive.
As it was explained to me by my architect cousin of mine is: homes contract and expand constantly and if the grouting is not done properly with conjunction with the right backing surface, it will cause small cracks in the grout thus allowing water to be absorb.
Over time that resulted in this downstairs in the foyer and stairs to second floor where the master bathroom is located.
Nice. Needless to say I have my work cut out for me. But I'm looking forward to this master bathroom remodeling makeover.
This is the cut away view after yesterday's exploritory search on what is located in the ceiling below. This is an important step in knowing what you have and what needs to be fixed. Notice the mold growing on the floor joist and the decking under the shower pan. I'm not too concerned about any of it. A simple bleach solution will take care of that problem. As for the decking, it will have to be replaced with a marine plywood instead of particle board what was used by the home builder.
